#HĀKINAKINA To Learn, To Grow, To Succeed
Mauri tū mauri ora. An active soul is a healthy soul.
We have been a successful provider of Moving the Māori Nation - an initiative from the Minister of Māori Development and Whānau Ora, Te Ururoa Flavell, in response to the shocking obesity rates amongst Māori and Pacific people in New Zealand.
#HĀKINAKINA is our brand to distinguish our programme from others throughout the rohe. We are dedicated to reversing the dangerous trend of non-active tamariki and their whānau. Our facilities, programmes and services aim to empower tamariki by helping mobilise them towards increased participation in sports, physical and cultural activities and to support them to acquire the necessary skills and confidence for a positive self-image.
We developed the Hākinakina Champions Programme in 2015 to enhance in a safe and nurturing environment the natural sporting attributes of taitamariki aged between 8 and 14 years.
Our Champions Programme aims to build excellence in Sport and Education. The overarching objective of our programme is to teach strong work ethics within a kaupapa Māori model of practice, with sports as the tool to motivation. This in turn enables taitamariki from all backgrounds the opportunity to excel in education and sport.
Each taitamariki is mentored and supported with fitness, health and wellbeing and learns about pathways in education.
WHEN: Every Monday and Wednesday during the school term, 6-8am
WHERE: Otangarei City Rugby Club Gymnasium, 10 Matai Street, Otangarei (the entrance is located on the far left of the building)
